Val became interested in pursuing a veterinary career after watching her childhood pony being treated by her local vet. She was successful in gaining a place to study Veterinary Science at Bristol University, where she gained a BSc in medical microbiology in 1979 as well as her BVSc with Honours in 1981.
She gained wide experience as a new graduate from posts in practices in Bedfordshire, Cardiff, and Usk.
Val won the Vet of the Year Award for the Wales and the West Region (sponsored by Spillers Petfoods) in 1996, and in recognition of her work for Petsavers, the profession’s own charity which promotes and sponsors veterinary research, she won the Petplan Petsavers Veterinary Achievement Award in 2001. Val completed the London Marathon 6 times between 1989 and 2005, raising several thousand pounds for this veterinary charity.
She has been involved with this practice from the earliest months after it first opened, initially working part time, then becoming a full time partner for 7 years, and now working 3 days per week.
Her interests include watching and taking part in many sports, especially cross country and distance running, swimming and triathlons, as well as horse riding, gaining the BHS Stage 1 Horse Care & Knowledge & Riding in June 2008. She enjoys watching National Hunt horse racing, Three Day Eventing, and other equestrian competitions. For many years she has also been involved in showing and breeding pedigree dogs, especially English Pointers
