All veterinary practices are required to provide 24 hour emergency care for their clients’ animals. This can be provided from within the practice, by arrangement with other local practices in a co operative group, or contracted out to a practice dedicated to providing emergency care. Such practices are becoming increasingly common in urban areas. In common with other local practices, we have taken the opportunity to use the services of Vets Emergency Treatment Services (V.E.T.S.) to provide emergency care for our clients for the following reasons:
• Our clients frequently express concern that no staff member is resident overnight or at weekends to monitor and treat hospitalised patients on our premises. At V.E.T.S., veterinary and nursing staff are resident on their premises and at least 1 staff member is awake throughout the night to monitor patients.
• The European Working Time Directive prohibits employees from working more than 48 hours per week, which regularly occurs when vets and nurses work a normal week and then additionally work nights and weekends on call.
• Life-critical decisions, such as are often required in emergency situations, are more difficult in the middle of the night if the vet has already worked a full day. For example, if your pet required an emergency anaesthetic at night for a high risk procedure, it is undeniably safer if the vet concerned is not mentally or physically tired after working a normal day shift.
As veterinary care becomes increasingly technically complex, and clients expectations correspondingly increase regarding the levels of care provided for their pets, we hope you will agree with our belief that the benefits provided at a dedicated emergency treatment centre outweigh the disadvantages of seeing an unfamiliar vet at a more distant location.
In cases of emergency, at all times, telephone either of our published surgery telephone numbers. After 6pm weekdays, and after midday Saturday, for the remainder of the weekend, our calls are automatically diverted to V.E.T.S. Emergency Service.
Our telephone numbers are : 01633 869300 (Fairwater)
01495 752375 (New Inn)
